Today, I am looking at the data compiled by the Australian New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA). I am recruiting a few anaesthesia jobs at the moment so thought it useful to look at the report for 1st January 2020 to 31st December 2020 on applications made by specialist international medical graduate (SIMGs) applications to ANZCA.
The specialist college data is a report of college 'activities' during 2020 and "reflects point in time reporting" as all SIMGs are unlikely to have completed all the steps required in their applications and processes exactly within 1/1/20 - 31/12/20 so accurate percentages and denominators can't be accurately calculated. Delays can occur etc.
Compared to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians which received the highest number of applications (149) and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons the next highest (89), ANZCA received 59 applications. This was down from 74 in 2019.
59 applications were received in in 2020. 30 applications were assessed as partially comparable and 20 were assessed as substantially comparable to an Anaesthetist trained in Australia. 18 were deemed not comparable.
The top 5 countries where ANZCA applications were received from:
UK: 17
Ireland: 10
India: 6
South Africa: 5
Sri Lanka: 2
10 applications out of the 59 were deemed incomplete on first submission, with 3 withdrawing before interim assessment.
In 2020 31 Fellows (FANZCA) who were SIMGs were welcomed into ANZCA.
Most of the colleges were naturally impacted by Covid - their processes, speed of assessment etc. SIMGs were also impacted choosing to delay their applications.
