Join a dedicated mental health service in the beautiful, tropical city of Townsville, North Queensland. Townsville offers a unique tropical coastal lifestyle. It has a major university, affordable housing and one of Queensland's leading private schools.
This is an exciting and rare opportunity for a Psychiatrist with special interests in Learning Disability to play a pivotal role in setting up a new service. It is a new position that will initially focus on the establishment and progressive development of the service followed by the setting up of Clinical Governance, Clinical Care and Service Evaluation systems.
This service will deliver a range of services that includes assessment and brief evidence-based bio-psycho-social interventions to patients in the who access Mental Health Services and have a diagnosed or suspected intellectual and developmental disability with co-occurring moderate to severe mental disorders. It also provides outreach functions to a regional health service. It has a multi-disciplinary team with a combination of Allied Health, Nursing and Mental Health medical staff.
The Learning Disability Model of Care includes:
- A consultation liaison model providing psychiatric assessment and management advice for patients with an intellectual or developmental disability (including autism) and co-occurring mental health disorders. This may include in reach to the Acute Mental Health Unit and THHS inpatient areas as well as some outreach.
- Offer case review and second opinions in situations of high complexity.
- Work closely with the patient’s health providers, families and support groups to implement effective management of their health conditions.
- Demonstrate an interdisciplinary focus in all areas of work including working across chronic and complex health issues in people with an intellectual disability.
- Providing education to primary care providers and the broader Mental Health Service Group
The community Learning Disability Mental Health Team will provide liaison with mainstream services including Adult and Older Person Mental Health, Child and Youth Mental Health Service, drug and alcohol services, develop local pathways for referral, assessment and management, LD skill enhancement within mainstream services, develop subject experts in the service's treating teams and maintain links with the sub-specialty Centre of excellence in Brisbane.
What We’re Looking For
- FRANZCP recognition or equivalent.
- Demonstrated interest and experience in Learning Disability psychiatry.
- Strong commitment to patient safety, clinical governance, and workforce development.
- Ability to innovate and foster collaborative relationships across departments and teams.
- An interest in developing a service from the ground up.
