About Rockhampton Hospital:
Rockhampton Hospital is a 305-bed facility, the central referral hospital for Central Queensland. It offers a wide range of specialist medical services, including Emergency Medicine, Cardiology, General Surgery, and Geriatrics. They host training programs in partnership with the University of Queensland and Central Queensland University.
Department profile
The Paediatric Department is led by a Clinical Director and supported by 5 FTE Consultant Paediatricians, 8 Registrars/Principal House Officers, 2 Resident Medical Officers, and 2 Interns.
The team is further strengthened by highly skilled and dedicated Nursing and Midwifery staff, who play a pivotal role in patient care and contribute significantly to the training of medical students, RMOs, and trainee registrars. A department-attached pharmacist provides daily pharmaceutical insights and medication guidance during ward rounds.
Special Care Nursery
The Level 4 Special Care Nursery is equipped with C.P.A.P. and ventilator capabilities, offering short-term respiratory support for newborns or stabilisation before transfer to a tertiary facility. Infants born before 32 weeks gestation are transferred in-utero whenever possible, in close collaboration with the Obstetrics team.
Paediatric Services
The hospital operates a dynamic Paediatric Outpatients Department managing a wide range of paediatric conditions, including a dedicated diabetic clinic. Outreach clinics serve regional towns and an Aboriginal Community, with plans underway to expand these services.
This comprehensive unit provides high-quality care and training in a supportive and professional environment.
This position is based at Rockhampton Hospital, with an expectation to deliver services across various locations within the broader health service.
You will work closely with the Director of Paediatrics to:
1. Ensure the delivery of high-quality, reliable, and cost-effective paediatric services within available resources.
2. Provide professional leadership and guidance to medical staff in the department.
3. Deliver clinical services at Rockhampton Hospital and other CQHHS sites as needed.
As part of the health service's unified service model, you may be required to provide care at other facilities within the region, in alignment with each location’s clinical service capabilities.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited:
- Provide specialist paediatric services to inpatients (including neotates in a level 4 special care nursery) clinical wards, outpatients (including specialist outpatient clinics) and ED paed presentations.
- Supporting ongoing safety and quality improvement initiatives.
-Supervising more junior colleagues - under and post grad.
- Participating in education, research, and training.
-Help establish and foster relationships between the hospital and relevant community groups to facilitate information flow about the service and to ensure continuum of care.

Selection criteria
- FRACP Paeds or equivalent.
- Demonstrated experience in various areas of paediatrics, including General Paediatrics, Outpatients, Neonatology (ventilation capability), Community Paediatrics, Child Protection, and Aboriginal Health.
- Willingness to participate in Outreach Clinics across the region.
- Sub-specialty expertise in Developmental Paediatrics, Neonatology, Allergy/Respiratory, Diabetes, Medical Education, or other areas is desirable to support Level 5 CSCF capability development.
- Special interests that enhance the department’s existing expertise, particularly in Developmental Paediatrics, Neonatology, or Allergy/Respiratory, are welcomed.
